Jack London Square Farmers Market
Founded in 1989, our favorite local farmers market – the Jack London Square Farmers Market has deep roots in Oakland, providing a vibrant waterfront marketplace for Bay Area families. It takes place in Oakland’s Jack London Square on Sundays (9 am to 2 pm), year-round, rain or shine, making it easy to grab your goods, just over a mile from your door at Orion. The bike and pedestrian paths along the Embarcadero make it an easy walk or bike between Brooklyn Basin and Jack London Square

The Market is operated by (PCFMA) Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association. Based in Concord, California, PCFMA has been operating farmers’ markets since 1988, creating community-based food experiences throughout the San Francisco Bay Area that support California family farms and a healthy local food system.

When fall is in full swing it brings apples, acorn squash, pears, persimmons, pomegranates, grapes, pumpkins, and many more fresh flavors. It’s easy to have apples on the mind in autumn. PCFMA shares a delicious recipe for an Apple Crisp using your fresh finds from the market. The taste of fall in a simple and delicious dessert!

Crisp filling
• 7 small tart apples, peeled, cored, cubed
• 2 tablespoons sugar
• 1 teaspoon honey
• 1 tablespoon white wine or hard cider
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/4 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

Topping
• 1 stick of butter, cubed
• 1/4 cup walnuts, chopped
• 1/4 cup rolled oats
• 1/4 cup brown sugar
• 1/4 cup white sugar
• 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 cup and 3 tablespoons flour

Preheat oven to 375°F. Mix crisp filling ingredients in a bowl and let it sit for an hour at room temperature. Strain the liquid; save for later. Put the apples and mixture in an 8-inch square pan. In a separate bowl, mix topping ingredients together, kneading until butter is mixed in thoroughly. Crumble topping over the top and bake until brown and bubbling. Check after 30 minutes, but it will likely take 45 minutes to 1 hour. Reduce strained liquid to a syrup in a saucepan and use it to top ice cream.
